Preparing to leave

(Sunday 11 January 2009) by Brennan-adventures
Hello Folks,
Here we are again looking forward to a trip away.... 3 weeks to go. We are starting our journey from Southampton U.K.
We live in the New Forrest, a fantastic place that attracts millions of visitors from all around the globe, but as we live here the views to us are normal and not as exciting as visitors find them.
The weather here has been cold for us softy southerners...-3c daytime and as low as -7c at night. Far too cold for someone who chose to leave Scotland for the warmer south coast !

Hubby, Mike has managed to negotiate some time off work in the U.K. and we are off to Brazil for 6 months.
This will be our second 6 month trip there, the last one being in 2005. We had a ball then meeting fantastic people and seeing some amazing places. Mike works when he is in Brazil at a University, but we get plenty time for travel usually getting to visit places off the beaten tourist trails.
This is the first time I have used a site like this so lets hope it goes well as I am an old fogie when it comes to computers... the best fun for me will be getting the photos downloaded.

We will be living in a town called Ilha Solteira in the state of Sao Paulo.... If you google earth it maybe you will find it there. It is a very small place about 26000 people live there, but as towns in Brazil go it is quite an affluent one because of the University there. The City was built in 1965 to accomodate the workers constructing the HUGE hydroelectric dam. The dam was finished in 1978.

In 1976 UNESP university located a campus in Ilha Solteira which includes mathamatics, engeneering, sciences and agriculture. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unesp

A lot of the staff joined the campus in 1976, they were young, just married and some of them far from their families. What has grown over the years is a community where most of the children were born around the same time. It is like one huge extended family across the town, all helping and supporting each other as their own families were far away.

We have been welcomed into this community and feel part of "the Family". Everyone in the city know us as Mikee and Lowra no need for last names as we are the about the only foreigners to live there.... It is so cool not to need a last name !!!

Well will go now .....packing for a trip To Scotland to visit family before jetting off to the warm of Brazil, Jan 31st here we come !!
